Wrinkles may be a natural part of aging, as the elastin and collagen breaks down in our skin. While IPL photofacials, acid peels, and even BOTOX help to reduce or eliminate wrinkles, there are simple things you can do to avoid wrinkles in the first place!
These tips are abbreviated from WebMd. For more information from WebMD on avoiding wrinkles, click here.
- Sleep on your back: Sleeping on your side or on your stomach may make you more prone to wrinkles on your cheeks, chin and brow.
- Eat salmon and other cold water fish which is rich in omega-3 (an essential fatty acid) and protein. Omega-3 and protein are essential building blocks to repairing our skin.
- Moisturize: Use creams and moisturizers high in AHA (alpha-hydroxy acids), which has been shown to help build the skin’s natural collagen production.
- Drink Hot Cocoa which is high levels of two dietary flavonols (epicatchin and catechin) which help to protect skin from sun damage and improve circulation to skin cells.
- Don’t Overwash your skin. By overwashing your skin, you wash away essential oils in the skin that help to protect against wrinkles.
- Eat more soy products (or take a soy supplement). Soy has shown to increase skin’s firmness and structure, which will keep your skin supple and wrinkle-free.
- Get Glasses! Squinting causes wrinkles- get regular eye exams to see if you need glasses. Wearing glasses will allow you to not only see properly, it will keep you from squinting, and help you avoid crows feet around the eyes.
- Don’t Smoke. The toxins in cigarettes not only age skin faster by breaking down collagen and elastin, but the puffing and sucking motion creates lines around the mouth that when repeated thousands of times, will create unnecessary wrinkles around the lips and mouth.
- Avoid the sun and wear sunskin: sun is the number one cause of wrinkles. If you have to be in the sun, wear sunskin to avoid skin cancer and ward off some of the sun’s harmful wrinkle-causing rays.
